The Texas Instruments LM35DT/NOPB is a precision integrated-circuit temperature sensor that produces an output voltage linearly proportional to the Celsius temperature with a scale factor of 10 mV/°C. Unlike thermistors or RTDs that require external signal conditioning, the LM35 provides a direct voltage output readable by any ADC without calibration or trimming. At 25°C, it achieves ±0.5°C typical accuracy, and the linear output eliminates lookup tables or polynomial calculations. The TO-220 package allows heat sink attachment for measuring surface or ambient temperature, and the 60 µA supply current ensures self-heating is below 0.1°C in still air. The DT suffix indicates the TO-220 package rated for the full -55°C to +150°C range.

The LM35DT/NOPB uses a bandgap-based temperature sensing circuit where the difference in base-emitter voltage (VBE) between two bipolar transistors operating at different current densities is proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT). This PTAT voltage is amplified and offset so that 0°C corresponds to 0V output, with a precisely trimmed gain of 10 mV/°C. The internal reference and trimming are performed at the factory using laser trimming of thin-film resistors, ensuring ±0.5°C accuracy at 25°C without any user calibration. The low 60 µA supply current minimizes Joule heating (P = V x I = 5V x 60µA = 0.3 mW), keeping self-heating errors below 0.1°C in still air. The low output impedance (0.1 Ohm) allows direct connection to ADC inputs without buffer amplifiers. For negative temperature measurement, a pull-down resistor to a negative supply enables the output to go below ground.
