The LM340MP-5.0/NOPB from Texas Instruments is a 1.5A, 35V input, fixed 5V positive linear voltage regulator in a SOT-223 package. Part of the legendary LM340/7805 family, it features internal current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe-area compensation, making it essentially indestructible with adequate heatsinking. The LM340MP-5.0/NOPB is a monolithic 3-terminal positive voltage regulator from Texas Instruments. It is part of the LM340/LM7805 family, one of the most widely used linear regulator families in the electronics industry. The device employs internal current-limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe-area compensation, making it extremely robust and reliable. With adequate heatsinking, it can deliver over 1.5A of output current. The SOT-223 package provides a good balance between compact size and thermal performance. The device is intended for fixed 5V regulation in a wide range of applications including local on-card regulation for elimination of noise and distribution problems associated with single-point regulation.

The LM340MP-5.0/NOPB uses a series pass transistor controlled by a feedback loop that compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider) with a precision bandgap reference. The error amplifier drives the base of the series pass transistor to maintain the output at 5.0V. Internal current-limiting circuitry senses the output current and limits it to a safe value during overload or short-circuit conditions. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and turns off the output when it exceeds approximately 170°C. Safe-area compensation reduces the current limit as the input-output differential increases, ensuring the pass transistor operates within its safe operating area at all times. No output capacitor is required for stability, although one improves transient response.
