The LM2931MX-5.0/NOPB is a Texas Instruments fixed 5V low-dropout positive voltage regulator optimized for battery-powered and standby power applications. The very low quiescent current of 1mA at 10mA load makes it ideal for always-on circuits where supply current must be minimized. The 0.6V maximum dropout voltage at full load allows operation from a 5.6V minimum input, and the 26V maximum input rating supports direct operation from automotive battery systems. The ON/OFF shutdown control pin enables the regulator to be disabled by logic, reducing supply current to near zero. Output current capability exceeds 100mA with internal short-circuit and thermal overload protection. The fixed 5V output eliminates external resistor dividers. Packaged in SOIC-8 rated for -40C to +125C.

The LM2931 uses a PNP pass transistor for low dropout operation. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage with an internal 5V bandgap reference, driving the PNP pass transistor to maintain regulation. The low dropout is achieved because the PNP transistor saturates with only 0.2V collector-emitter voltage at light loads (0.6V max at 100mA). The very low quiescent current results from a carefully biased internal reference and error amplifier that draws minimal supply current. The ON/OFF pin controls an internal switch that disables the pass transistor and most internal circuitry when pulled low, reducing supply current to microamps. The 100uF output capacitor is required for stability and also serves as an energy reservoir for load transients.
