The LM2591HVSX-5.0/NOPB is a Texas Instruments SIMPLE SWITCHER step-down voltage regulator in a 5-pin TO-263 (D2PAK) surface-mount package. The HV version supports input voltages up to 60V, making it suitable for 48V telecom and automotive applications. The fixed 5.0V output version provides up to 1A output current with a 150 kHz fixed switching frequency. The device integrates the 1.5A NPN power switch, oscillator, control, and thermal shutdown in a single IC, requiring only four external components (input capacitor, output capacitor, catch diode, and inductor) to implement a complete step-down regulator. The 150 kHz switching frequency is a compromise between efficiency and inductor size, allowing compact designs with standard off-the-shelf inductors. The device features excellent line and load regulation, programmable soft-start, and a shutdown mode that reduces supply current to less than 200 uA.

The LM2591HVSX-5.0/NOPB uses a fixed-frequency (150 kHz) current-mode PWM control scheme. The internal oscillator generates a 150 kHz clock that sets the RS flip-flop at the beginning of each cycle, turning on the NPN power switch. The switch current ramps through the external inductor, and the current sense amplifier monitors the switch current. When the switch current reaches the error amplifier output threshold, the RS flip-flop is reset and the power switch turns off. The inductor current then freewheels through the external catch diode, ramping down. The error amplifier compares the output voltage (via the internal 5.0V resistor divider) with the 1.23V internal reference, adjusting the current threshold to regulate the output. In discontinuous conduction mode at light loads, the switch current ramps from zero each cycle, and the duty cycle decreases to maintain regulation. The thermal shutdown circuit disables the switch when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 165C.
