The L6562AN from STMicroelectronics is a current-mode PFC controller operating in transition mode (TM). Sharing the same pinout as predecessors L6561 and L6562, it offers improved performance with a highly linear multiplier featuring a THD optimizer circuit that reduces AC input current distortion near zero-crossings. The device features an accurate 1% internal reference voltage, dynamic and static output overvoltage protection, ultra-low 30μA startup current, and a -600mA/+800mA totem-pole gate driver suitable for driving external MOSFETs in PFC boost converters up to 400W.

The L6562A controls an external MOSFET in a boost converter topology operating in critical conduction mode (transition mode). The multiplier generates a reference current signal proportional to both the rectified AC input voltage (via the MULT pin) and the error amplifier output (via INV/COMP pins). The MOSFET turns on at the start of each switching cycle and turns off when the source current through the sense resistor reaches the multiplier reference. The ZCD pin detects when the boost inductor current returns to zero, triggering the next MOSFET turn-on. This zero-current switching minimizes switching losses and naturally shapes the input current to follow the line voltage, achieving high power factor.
