The KSZ9896CTXI from Microchip is a fully integrated Layer 2 managed 6-port Gigabit Ethernet switch in a 128-TQFP-EP package. Five ports integrate 10/100/1000Base-T PHYs with auto-MDIX, while the sixth port is a configurable MAC interface (GMII/RGMII/MII/RMII) for connection to a host processor or uplink PHY. The device supports comprehensive Layer 2 features including IEEE 802.1Q VLAN (128 active groups), QoS with 4 priority queues, IGMP/MLD snooping, ACL filtering, and IEEE 802.1X port authentication. Management is via SPI (up to 50MHz), I2C, or MIIM. Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) and Wake-on-LAN reduce power consumption.

The KSZ9896CTXI integrates five Gigabit Ethernet PHYs and a configurable MAC port with a non-blocking switching fabric. Each PHY performs 4D-PAM5 encoding/decoding for 1000Base-T, MLT-3 for 100Base-TX, and Manchester for 10Base-Te, with auto-negotiation and auto-MDIX. The switching engine performs address lookup using a hash-based MAC address table with up to 4K entries. Ingress packets are classified by VLAN tags (802.1Q), DSCP, or ACL rules, then assigned to one of four priority queues per port. IGMP/MLD snooping filters multicast traffic. The RGMII uplink port connects to an external CPU or SoC for management and higher-layer processing.
