The KSZ8041FTLI from Microchip Technology is a single-port 10/100Mbps Ethernet physical layer transceiver compliant with IEEE 802.3u. It supports both MII and RMII MAC interfaces, providing flexible connectivity to a wide range of microcontrollers and FPGAs. The device features auto-negotiation for automatic speed and duplex selection, and auto-MDIX for automatic crossover detection, eliminating the need for crossover cables. Power management features include power-down mode and energy detect mode for reduced power consumption during idle periods. The management interface follows IEEE 802.3 Clause 22 SMI (MDIO/MDC). Available in LQFP-48 package for the industrial -40C to +85C temperature range.

The KSZ8041FTLI implements the IEEE 802.3u physical layer for 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX Ethernet. (1) 100BASE-TX Transmitter: The MAC sends nibble-wide data via MII or 2-bit data via RMII. The PHY performs 4B/5B encoding, scrambling, MLT-3 encoding, and drives the differential transmit pair through an integrated line driver. (2) 100BASE-TX Receiver: The differential receive pair is equalized, decoded using MLT-3, descrambled, and 5B/4B decoded before presentation to the MAC. (3) Auto-Negotiation: The PHY exchanges FLP bursts with the link partner to determine the highest common speed and duplex setting. (4) Auto-MDIX: The device automatically detects whether a crossover is needed and swaps the transmit and receive pairs accordingly. (5) Management: The MDIO/MDC serial management interface provides register access for configuration and status monitoring per IEEE 802.3 Clause 22.
