The Texas Instruments HDC2010YPAR is an ultra-low-power digital humidity and temperature sensor in a wafer-level chip-scale package (WLCSP/DSBGA-6) measuring just 1.60 x 1.20 x 0.50 mm—the smallest humidity sensor available. The device measures relative humidity with +/-2% accuracy (typical) from 0-100% RH and temperature with +/-0.2C accuracy from -40C to +125C. The 14-bit humidity resolution and 14-bit temperature resolution provide fine-grained environmental monitoring for HVAC, smart thermostats, wearables, and white goods. The supply current is only 550 nA average at 1 Hz measurement rate, enabling years of operation from a coin cell battery. The I2C interface (up to 400 kHz) provides read access to the humidity and temperature data registers, with a programmable address pin supporting two devices on a single bus. The device includes a programmable interrupt threshold for humidity and temperature, enabling event-driven architectures where the host MCU sleeps until an environmental threshold is crossed—critical for battery-powered HVAC and comfort monitoring systems. The optional integrated heating element (up to 130C for 2 minutes) removes condensation that can cause inaccurate humidity readings in high-humidity or rapid-temperature-change environments. Factory calibration ensures out-of-the-box accuracy without user calibration.

The HDC2010 uses a capacitive humidity sensing element where the dielectric constant of a polymer film changes with absorbed water vapor, altering the capacitance of the sensing element. A delta-sigma capacitance-to-digital converter measures this capacitance change and outputs a 14-bit digital value proportional to relative humidity. The temperature sensor uses a bandgap-based PTAT (proportional to absolute temperature) circuit that generates a voltage proportional to temperature, which is then converted by a separate ADC. Both humidity and temperature measurements are factory-calibrated with correction coefficients stored in on-chip OTP memory—the correction is applied automatically during each measurement, requiring no user intervention. The measurement sequence is controlled by a state machine: the device wakes from sleep mode, performs the humidity measurement, performs the temperature measurement, updates the data registers, checks the interrupt thresholds, and returns to sleep. At 1 Hz measurement rate, the device is active for only 570 us per second, consuming 550 nA average. The I2C interface is used to configure the measurement rate (0-120 Hz), resolution (8/11/14 bits for humidity, 11/14 bits for temperature), interrupt thresholds, and heating element duration.
