The FT234XD-R from FTDI Chip is a single-channel USB 2.0 full-speed to UART bridge controller in an ultra-compact DFN-12 package measuring just 3mm x 3mm. The device eliminates the need for an external crystal by recovering the clock from the USB data stream, reducing BOM cost and board area. It supports UART data rates from 300bps to 3Mbaud with 512-byte transmit and receive FIFOs for smooth data flow. The integrated 2048-byte MTP (Multi-Time Programmable) memory stores USB Vendor ID, Product ID, serial number, and other configuration data. Three CBUS pins can be configured for TX/RX LEDs, sleep mode indication, or clock output functions. The I/O voltage is independently configurable from 1.8V to 3.3V, enabling direct connection to low-voltage MCUs and FPGAs without level shifters.

The FT234XD-R operates as a bridge between the USB host and a UART serial port. On the USB side, the device enumerates as a Virtual COM Port (VCP) using FTDI drivers or as a D2XX direct driver device. USB data is received and placed into the 512-byte receive FIFO, then serialized out the TXD pin at the configured baud rate. Similarly, data received on RXD is packed into the 512-byte transmit FIFO and sent to the USB host. The internal 1.8V LDO generates the core supply from VCC (2.97V~5.5V), and a 0.1uF capacitor on VDD decouples this rail. The MTP EEPROM is programmed via FTDI utilities to customize VID/PID, serial number, CBUS pin functions, and I/O drive strength. USB battery charging detection can signal a connected charger to deliver higher current for faster device charging.
