The 3-level NPC topology reduces output voltage steps and harmonic content compared to 2-level inverters, enabling smaller output filters and lower motor insulation stress. The Trench/Fieldstop IGBT4 technology with E3 optimization provides low conduction losses (VCE(sat) = 2.20V typical) and fast switching for high-efficiency power conversion.

The FF400R12KE3HOSA1 implements a 3-level Neutral Point Clamped (NPC) inverter topology in a single module. The NPC topology uses 12 IGBTs arranged as four switch pairs across the DC bus: two outer switches (S1/S4) connect to the positive and negative DC rails, and two inner switches (S2/S3) connect to the neutral point via clamping diodes. Each phase output can be connected to +VDC/2, 0, or -VDC/2, producing a 3-level output voltage waveform. This reduces the voltage stress on each IGBT to VDC/2 (600V for a 1200V DC bus), and the output harmonics are significantly lower than 2-level PWM, reducing motor cable reflections and bearing currents. The IGBT4 Trench/Fieldstop structure uses a trench gate for high channel density (low VCE(sat)) and a field-stop layer for thin-wafer voltage blocking (fast switching, low Eoff). The E3 emitter-controlled diodes provide soft reverse recovery with low recovery charge (Qrr) to minimize IGBT turn-on losses and electromagnetic noise.
