The ESP8266EX from Espressif Systems is the chip that democratized WiFi for embedded systems. When it launched in 2014, it disrupted the IoT market by offering a complete WiFi solution with integrated TCP/IP stack and 32-bit processor for under $1. The Tensilica L106 core runs at up to 160MHz with 64KB IRAM and 96KB DRAM, providing enough processing power for application logic alongside WiFi communication. The 802.11 b/g/n radio supports station mode (connecting to a router), soft-AP mode (acting as an access point), and simultaneous STA+AP mode. The 17 GPIO pins support SPI, I2C, UART, I2S, and PWM peripherals. The single 10-bit ADC channel reads analog sensors. Deep sleep mode reduces current to 20uA for battery-powered applications. The massive Arduino and NodeMCU open-source ecosystem provides libraries for MQTT, HTTP, OTA updates, and virtually every IoT protocol.

The ESP8266EX integrates a Tensilica L106 32-bit RISC processor, WiFi baseband/MAC/RF, and peripheral interfaces on a single die. The L106 core executes instructions from 64KB IRAM and accesses data in 96KB DRAM. The WiFi subsystem handles the 802.11 b/g/n PHY and MAC layers, offloading the processor from low-level WiFi processing. The RF front-end requires only a few external components (crystal, antenna matching, and decoupling capacitors). The boot ROM contains the bootloader that loads firmware from external SPI Flash into IRAM. The WiFi stack runs as a background task, handling association, authentication, and data transfer while the application runs on the main processor. Power management modes include active, modem sleep (WiFi off, CPU on), light sleep (CPU paused), and deep sleep (only RTC running, 20uA).
