Normal Operation: Under normal operating conditions, the protected signal lines (IO1 through IO4) are within the working voltage range (0 to ±3.6 V). The TVS diodes present a very low leakage current (10 nA max) and low capacitance (0.55 pF typ), ensuring minimal signal degradation on high-speed interfaces. The bidirectional clamping structure allows both positive and negative going transients to be suppressed.

ESD Event Clamping: When an electrostatic discharge event occurs on any IO channel, the TVS diode for that channel rapidly avalanches, diverting the ESD current to ground. The device clamps the voltage at approximately 8.5 V (at 5.5 A IPP), protecting downstream ICs. The low dynamic resistance (0.3 Ω typ) ensures efficient energy diversion with minimal overshoot.

Surge Protection: For IEC 61000-4-5 surge events (8/20 μs waveform), the device can handle up to 5.5 A peak pulse current, dissipating up to 50 W of peak pulse power. The TVS structure absorbs the surge energy and routes it to the GND pins, maintaining the clamping voltage below the damage threshold of protected circuitry.

EFT Protection: For fast electrical transients per IEC 61000-4-4, the device handles 80 A (5/50 ns) by rapidly turning on the avalanche junction, clamping the voltage excursion before it can propagate to sensitive downstream components.

Flow-Through Routing: The USON-10 (DQA) package is designed with signal entry on one side and exit on the opposite side, enabling straightforward PCB trace routing through the ESD device without vias or trace redirection, minimizing parasitic inductance and preserving signal integrity at high data rates.
