The VNH3SP30TR-E from STMicroelectronics is a fully integrated H-bridge motor driver designed for automotive applications. The device integrates two monolithic high-side drivers and two low-side switches in a full-bridge configuration, rated for 30A continuous output current with 45mohm total on-resistance. The driver operates from 5.5V to 40V supply and includes an analog current sense output proportional to motor current, thermal shutdown with hysteresis, and overcurrent protection. AEC-Q100 qualified, the device is suitable for under-hood automotive DC motor applications. The TR suffix indicates tape and reel packaging, and E suffix denotes the lead-free automotive-grade version.

The VNH3SP30TR-E operates as a full H-bridge motor driver. (1) The device integrates two high-side switches (N-channel MOSFETs with charge pump gate drive) and two low-side switches in an H-bridge configuration. By controlling the INA and INB logic inputs, the motor can be driven forward, reverse, brake, or freewheeling. The PWM input enables speed control through pulse-width modulation up to 10kHz. (2) The current sense amplifier provides an analog voltage output proportional to the motor current flowing through the active high-side switch, enabling torque monitoring and overcurrent detection without an external shunt resistor. (3) Thermal shutdown activates when the junction temperature exceeds approximately 170C, disabling the outputs and asserting the diagnostic flag. The device automatically restarts when the junction cools by the hysteresis amount, providing self-protecting operation.
