The TL431IDBVR from Texas Instruments is a three-terminal adjustable precision shunt regulator in a 5-pin SOT-23 package. The I suffix indicates industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C), DBV denotes the SOT-23-5 package, and R indicates tape and reel. The standard grade provides +/-2% initial accuracy at 25C, while the A grade offers +/-1% and B grade +/-0.5%. The output voltage is set by two external resistors between Vref (approximately 2.495V) and 36V. With 0.2Ohm typical output impedance and 1mA to 100mA sink current capability, the TL431 provides a sharp turn-on characteristic that makes it an excellent replacement for Zener diodes. The active output circuitry provides much better regulation than passive Zener diodes, especially at low operating currents. This is the most widely used voltage reference IC in switching power supply feedback loops.

The TL431 operates as a precision shunt regulator through three terminal functions: (1) Reference Input (REF): The REF pin is compared against an internal 2.495V bandgap reference. When the voltage at REF exceeds Vref, the cathode current increases sharply, pulling the cathode voltage lower. This creates a high-gain feedback loop when used with external resistor dividers. (2) Cathode (CATHODE): The cathode terminal sinks current from 1mA to 100mA to regulate the output voltage. The 0.2Ohm typical dynamic impedance means the cathode voltage varies only 0.2V for a 1A change in cathode current (within the operating range). The sharp turn-on characteristic below Vref ensures the device does not draw significant current until the threshold is reached. (3) Output Voltage Setting: The output voltage is programmed by two resistors (R1 from cathode to REF, R2 from REF to anode): VOUT = Vref x (1 + R1/R2). The reference input current (approximately 2uA) introduces a small error that can be compensated by adjusting R2. The device requires a minimum cathode current of 1mA for proper regulation.
