The TAJA225K016RNJ from AVX/Kyocera is a 2.2uF, 16V molded tantalum chip capacitor in a B-case (3.2×1.6×1.2mm) surface-mount package. Part of the industry-standard TAJ series, the device provides stable capacitance with +/-10% tolerance and low ESR for reliable power supply decoupling and filtering. The molded construction provides excellent moisture resistance and mechanical reliability. The internal fused design offers fail-safe protection by opening the circuit during fault conditions rather than shorting, enhancing system safety. The device operates over a -55C to +125C temperature range with stable electrical characteristics. The 0.35uA maximum leakage current ensures minimal power drain in always-on circuits. The TAJ series is widely used in industrial, automotive, and consumer electronics for bulk decoupling and output filtering.

The TAJA225K016RNJ uses tantalum metal as the anode with a manganese dioxide cathode. (1) Dielectric: A thin tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) layer formed on the sintered tantalum pellet serves as the dielectric. The oxide layer thickness determines the voltage rating (16V). The dielectric provides high capacitance per unit volume due to its high dielectric constant (approximately 27) and thin formation. (2) Cathode: Manganese dioxide (MnO2) serves as the solid cathode, providing self-healing properties. If a localized dielectric breakdown occurs, the resulting heat converts MnO2 to Mn2O3 (lower conductivity), isolating the defect site. (3) Fused Protection: The internal fuse element opens during sustained overcurrent or short-circuit conditions, disconnecting the capacitor from the circuit in a fail-safe manner. (4) ESR: The equivalent series resistance of approximately 6 Ohms at 100kHz is determined by the combination of dielectric losses, MnO2 resistance, and contact resistance.
