The SP3220EEY-L/TR from Sipex (now MaxLinear) is a 3.0V to 5.5V powered RS-232 transceiver that provides 3 drivers and 5 receivers in a single 28-lead SSOP package. The 3-driver/5-receiver configuration is specifically designed for serial port applications that require the standard serial port signals (TX, RX, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, RI) plus a PS/2 mouse port, making it a popular choice for laptop and notebook computer serial port implementations. The integrated charge pump uses four external 0.1uF capacitors to generate the +/-5.5V (minimum) RS-232 voltage levels from a single 3.0V to 5.5V supply, eliminating the need for dual +/-12V supplies traditionally required for RS-232 communication. The charge pump voltage doubler and inverter operate at a high internal frequency to minimize capacitor size. The auto power-down feature monitors the RS-232 receiver inputs; when no valid RS-232 signal is detected on any receiver for approximately 30 seconds, the device enters a low-power shutdown mode consuming only 1uA, making it ideal for battery-powered devices. The device automatically wakes up when a valid RS-232 signal returns. The +/-15kV HBM and +/-8kV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection on the RS-232 pins provides robust protection against electrostatic discharge during cable connection and disconnection. The 120kbps minimum data rate supports all standard RS-232 baud rates up to 115.2kbps.

The SP3220EEY-L/TR operates as an RS-232 level translator with integrated charge pump. Key subsystems include: (1) Charge Pump – a voltage doubler circuit uses two external capacitors (C1, C2) to double VCC to approximately 2xVCC, and a voltage inverter uses two more capacitors (C3, C4) to invert the doubled voltage to approximately -2xVCC; with a 3.3V supply, the charge pump generates approximately +5.5V and -5.5V, which meet the +/-5V minimum RS-232 output requirement; the charge pump operates at an internal oscillator frequency of approximately 300kHz; (2) Drivers – three inverting level translators convert TTL/CMOS logic levels (0V/3.3V) to RS-232 levels (+5.5V/-5.5V); the drivers have a typical output swing of +/-5.4V with a 3.3V supply and 3kOhm/1000pF RS-232 load; the drivers are current-limited and can be forced to opposite polarity by an active RS-232 signal without damage; (3) Receivers – five inverting level translators convert RS-232 levels (+/-3V to +/-15V) to TTL/CMOS logic levels; the receivers have a 0.8V hysteresis for noise immunity; the input threshold is 0.8V to 2.4V for standard TTL compatibility; the receiver inputs can withstand +/-25V without damage; (4) Auto Power-Down – the receiver input monitor circuit checks if any valid RS-232 signal (more positive than approximately 2.7V or more negative than -2.7V) is present on any receiver input; if no signal is detected for approximately 30 seconds, the charge pump and drivers are disabled, reducing supply current to 1uA; the receivers remain active at reduced sensitivity to detect when a signal returns.
