The SN75176BP is an RS-485/RS-422 differential bus transceiver from Texas Instruments in DIP-8, combining a tri-state differential driver and differential receiver on a single chip. The driver converts single-ended TTL/CMOS data into differential signals (A and B) suitable for transmission over twisted-pair cable up to 1200 meters (4000 feet). The receiver converts the differential signal back to single-ended TTL/CMOS with ±200mV sensitivity, providing excellent noise immunity in industrial environments. The driver and receiver can be active simultaneously for full-duplex 4-wire RS-422, or the DE (Driver Enable) and RE# (Receiver Enable) pins can be used for half-duplex 2-wire RS-485. The device supports up to 32 nodes on a single bus (one unit load per device). The common-mode range of -7V to +12V allows operation in the presence of ground potential differences between nodes. The thermal shutdown at 150°C protects against line contention faults. The -BP suffix specifies DIP-8, commercial temperature (0°C to +70°C). The SN75176 is one of the most widely used RS-485 transceivers in the industry, with second-source availability from multiple manufacturers.

The SN75176BP contains two independent functional blocks: a differential driver and a differential receiver, each with its own enable control. The driver: When DE (Driver Enable) is HIGH, the driver is active. The DI (Driver Input) signal controls the differential output: DI=HIGH drives A HIGH and B LOW (logic 1); DI=LOW drives A LOW and B HIGH (logic 0). The driver output current is 60mA into a 54-ohm load (27 ohms each side to a 5V termination), producing a differential voltage of at least 1.5V. When DE is LOW, the driver outputs are high-impedance (tri-state), allowing other nodes to transmit. The receiver: When RE# (Receiver Enable) is LOW, the receiver is active. It compares the voltage difference between A and B: if (A-B) > 200mV, RO (Receiver Output) = HIGH; if (A-B) < -200mV, RO = LOW; if |A-B| 200mV differential, preventing false start bits.
