The SN74HC595N from Texas Instruments is an 8-bit shift register with output latch and 3-state outputs that converts serial data from 3 MCU pins (DATA, SRCLK, RCLK) into 8 parallel outputs. The two-stage architecture (shift register + output latch) allows new data to be shifted in while the current output remains stable, eliminating output glitches during updates. The QH’ serial output enables daisy-chaining multiple 74HC595 devices for unlimited output expansion while using only 3 MCU pins. The 3-state outputs with Output Enable (OE) allow the device to be connected to a shared bus. With 25MHz shift frequency and +/-6mA output drive at 5V, it is the most popular IC for LED matrix driving and GPIO expansion.

The 74HC595 contains two 8-bit registers: the shift register and the storage register (output latch). Serial data is clocked into the shift register on the rising edge of SRCLK. When RCLK rises, the shift register contents are copied to the storage register, which drives the Q0-Q7 outputs. This two-stage pipeline allows shifting new data without disturbing the current output. The SRCLR pin asynchronously clears the shift register. The OE pin controls the 3-state output buffers: when OE is high, all outputs are high-impedance; when low, the storage register drives the outputs. The QH’ pin outputs the last bit of the shift register, which becomes the first bit of the next daisy-chained device.
