The SN74HC595D from Texas Instruments is an 8-bit shift register with output latches and 3-state outputs in an SOIC-16 surface-mount package. It expands 3 MCU I/O pins into 8 parallel outputs, cascadable for unlimited expansion. Functionally identical to the SN74HC595N DIP version.

The SN74HC595D from Texas Instruments is the SOIC-16 surface-mount version of the industry-standard SN74HC595 8-bit shift register with output latch. It converts a serial data stream into 8 parallel outputs using only 3 MCU I/O pins (SER, SRCLK, RCLK). The two-stage architecture separates the shift register from the output latch: data shifts into the register on SRCLK rising edges, then transfers to the output latch on RCLK rising edges. This allows the outputs to update simultaneously without showing the shifting process. The Q7′ cascade output enables daisy-chaining: multiple SN74HC595D devices can be cascaded to expand to 16, 24, 32, or more outputs while still using only 3 MCU pins. The 3-state output enable (OE) allows the outputs to be disabled for bus-sharing applications. The SOIC-16 package is ideal for surface-mount PCB designs.

The SN74HC595D contains two 8-bit registers: the shift register and the output latch. Serial data on SER is shifted into the shift register on each rising edge of SRCLK. After 8 (or more) clock cycles, the RCLK (register clock) rising edge transfers the shift register contents to the output latch, updating QA-QH simultaneously. The SRCLR (shift register clear) asynchronously clears the shift register. The OE (output enable) pin, when HIGH, puts the outputs in a high-impedance state. The Q7′ output reflects the shift register bit 7, enabling cascading: Q7′ of the first device connects to SER of the second device. Both devices share SRCLK and RCLK, so the entire chain updates together. At 52MHz shift frequency, 8 bits can be shifted in 8/52MHz = 154ns, enabling rapid updates even with long cascaded chains.
