The MP28164GD-Z is a Monolithic Power Systems (MPS) high-efficiency single-inductor buck-boost converter in a compact QFN-11 (2x3mm) package. The single-inductor topology seamlessly transitions between buck, boost, and buck-boost modes, maintaining a regulated output whether the input voltage is above, below, or equal to the output – ideal for Li-Ion battery-powered systems where the battery voltage ranges from 2.7V to 4.2V. The 1.2V to 5.5V input range supports operation from deeply discharged batteries and 5V USB sources. The 1.5V to 5V output range covers common system rails (1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V, 5V). The 4.2A switch current limit provides 2A output current at 3.3V from a 2.5V to 5.5V input. The 2MHz fixed switching frequency minimizes inductor and capacitor size for compact portable designs. The 25uA quiescent current maximizes battery life during light-load operation. Selectable PFM/PWM mode trades off light-load efficiency (PFM) vs. low ripple (PWM). The power-good output indicates output regulation status. Hiccup-mode short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown handle fault conditions. The -Z suffix indicates tape-and-reel packaging. Packaged in QFN-11 rated for -40C to +125C.

The MP28164 uses a single-inductor four-switch (S4) buck-boost topology with four integrated MOSFET switches (SWA, SWB, SWC, SWD) and one external inductor. In buck mode (VIN > VOUT), SWA/SWB PWM switch while SWD remains on and SWC off, operating as a synchronous buck converter. In boost mode (VIN < VOUT), SWC/SWD PWM switch while SWA remains on and SWB off, operating as a synchronous boost converter. In buck-boost mode (VIN approximately equal to VOUT), all four switches operate in each cycle to transfer energy. The control loop uses a current-mode PWM with a fixed 2MHz clock. An internal voltage reference and error amplifier maintain output regulation across all three operating modes with seamless transitions. The mode transitions include hysteresis to prevent chattering at the boundary. In PFM mode at light loads, the converter skips pulses to reduce effective switching frequency and switching losses. The internal soft-start ramps the reference voltage over 4ms, limiting inrush current. The PG comparator asserts when the output reaches 90% of the target voltage.
