The MCP9600T-E/MX from Microchip Technology is a fully integrated thermocouple-to-digital converter that eliminates the need for external cold-junction compensation, signal conditioning, and ADC circuitry. The device supports 8 standard thermocouple types (K, J, T, N, S, E, B, R) with selectable NIST-standard conversion tables stored in internal ROM. The 18-bit resolution provides 0.0625C temperature steps, while the +/-1.5C accuracy for K-type thermocouples covers the full -200C to +1372C measurement range. The internal cold-junction compensation sensor achieves +/-0.5C accuracy, automatically applying the correction to the thermocouple reading. Four configurable alert outputs with independent thresholds enable hardware-level over-temperature, under-temperature, and window detection without MCU polling. The I2C interface supports up to 1 MHz (FM+) for fast data readout. The QFN-20 package provides a compact footprint with an exposed pad for thermal coupling to the cold junction.

The MCP9600 integrates a precision instrumentation amplifier, a high-resolution delta-sigma ADC, a cold-junction temperature sensor, and NIST-standard thermocouple lookup tables. The thermocouple generates a small Seebeck voltage proportional to the temperature difference between the hot junction (measurement point) and the cold junction (connection point). The instrumentation amplifier amplifies this millivolt-level signal with low noise and high input impedance. Simultaneously, the internal cold-junction temperature sensor (a silicon bandgap sensor) measures the temperature at the thermocouple connection point. The ADC digitizes the amplified Seebeck voltage, and the digital logic adds the cold-junction temperature to the thermocouple EMF reading using the NIST-standard lookup table for the selected thermocouple type, outputting the absolute hot-junction temperature directly. The 18-bit resolution is achieved through a 3rd-order delta-sigma modulator with decimation filtering. The 4 alert comparators operate on the digital temperature value with programmable hysteresis and interrupt behavior.
