The MCP23017-E/SP from Microchip is a 16-bit I2C I/O expander with three hardware address pins for up to 8 devices on one bus. Features 25mA sink/source per I/O, configurable interrupt outputs, and 1uA standby current in SPDIP-28 through-hole package.

Communicates with host MCU via I2C bus. Two 8-bit ports (PORTA/PORTB) can be independently configured as inputs or outputs via IODIRA/B registers. Interrupt pins alert host of input changes. Polarity inversion register allows active-low input sensing without software inversion.
