The MIC5205-3.3YM5-TR from Microchip Technology is an ultra-low-noise, low-dropout linear regulator optimized for noise-sensitive applications. Providing a fixed 3.3V output at up to 150mA, it achieves only 30uVrms output noise with a noise reduction bypass capacitor, making it ideal for RF, audio, and precision analog circuits. The 165mV dropout voltage at full load enables efficient operation from 3.5V input. A logic-controlled enable pin allows shutdown to 0.01uA for power management in battery-operated systems.

The MIC5205-3.3YM5-TR operates as a PNP-based LDO linear regulator optimized for low noise. **Pass Element**: A PNP pass transistor enables low dropout operation (165mV at 150mA), significantly lower than NPN-based LDOs. The dropout voltage scales with output current. **Noise Reduction**: A noise reduction (NR) pin connects to an internal voltage reference through a high-value resistor. Adding an external capacitor (0.01uF) from NR to GND filters reference noise, dramatically reducing output noise to 30uVrms. This is the primary noise reduction mechanism unique to the MIC5205 family. **Error Amplifier**: A high-gain error amplifier compares the output voltage against the filtered reference. The amplifier bandwidth and compensation are designed for stability with ceramic output capacitors as small as 1uF. **Enable Control**: The EN pin provides logic-controlled shutdown. When EN is low, the output is disabled and ground current drops to 0.01uA, making it suitable for power gating in battery systems. **Protection**: Current limiting protects against overload. Thermal shutdown disables the output when junction temperature exceeds approximately 160C.
