The MC9S08QG8CDTE from NXP (formerly Freescale) is a member of the HCS08 family of 8-bit microcontrollers, offering 8KB Flash and 512 bytes RAM in an ultra-compact DIP-8 through-hole package. Despite the minimal 8-pin package, the device provides 6 GPIO pins with peripheral functions including an 8-channel 10-bit ADC, a 16-bit Timer/PWM Module (TPM), an 8-bit Modulo Timer (MTIM), and an SCI (UART) serial communication interface. The 1.8V to 5.5V supply range supports both 3.3V and 5V systems. The Background Debug Controller (BDC) provides single-wire debug access, eliminating the need for a full JTAG interface. The DIP-8 package makes this device ideal for prototyping, hobby, and educational applications where through-hole soldering is preferred.

The MC9S08QG8CDTE uses the HCS08 CPU core, an enhanced version of the HC08 architecture with improved instruction set efficiency and a background debug mode. The core executes a mix of 8-bit and 16-bit instructions from the internal Flash at up to 10 MHz bus frequency. The 8KB Flash is organized in 512-byte sectors for flexible erase granularity. The 512-byte SRAM supports stack and variable storage. The internal clock generator (ICG) can be configured for internal RC oscillator, external crystal, or external clock modes. The 16-bit TPM module supports input capture, output compare, and PWM generation with selectable clock prescaler. The 10-bit ADC uses a successive approximation architecture with an internal sample-and-hold circuit, supporting both single-channel and continuous scan modes. The SCI module provides standard asynchronous serial communication with configurable baud rate. The Background Debug Controller allows real-time debug access through a single BKGD pin without affecting CPU operation.
