The MAX232N from Texas Instruments is the industry-standard dual RS-232 driver/receiver operating from a single 5V supply. The integrated charge pump generates ±10V RS-232 levels, requiring only four external 1µF capacitors. The 16-pin DIP (PDIP) package provides 2 drivers and 2 receivers for full-duplex communication at up to 120 kbps.

The MAX232 uses an internal charge pump (voltage doubler and inverter) to generate ±10V supplies from the 5V VCC. The drivers convert TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 voltage swings (±5V to ±10V). The receivers convert RS-232 levels back to TTL/CMOS. The charge pump requires four external 1µF capacitors.
