The LM393N from Texas Instruments is the industry standard dual differential comparator with open-collector outputs. It operates from a single 2V to 36V supply and features 1.3us typical response time, +/-1mV typical input offset voltage, and only 0.4mA total supply current. The open-collector outputs allow wired-OR connections and interface with any logic voltage from 0 to VCC through external pull-up resistors. When the non-inverting input exceeds the inverting input, the output transistor turns off (high impedance); when the inverting input is higher, the output transistor turns on, sinking current to ground. This flexible output structure makes the LM393N suitable for a wide range of threshold detection, window comparison, and oscillator applications.

The LM393N uses a differential input stage followed by a gain stage and an open-collector NPN output transistor. The differential pair compares the two input voltages: when IN+ > IN-, the gain stage turns off the output transistor (output is high impedance, pulled high by external resistor); when IN+ < IN-, the gain stage turns on the output transistor (output saturates to near ground). The open-collector structure means the output can only sink current (pull to ground), never source it. This allows multiple comparator outputs to be wire-ORed together and the output pull-up voltage to be different from the comparator supply voltage. The 1.3us response time is the propagation delay from input crossing to output transition.
