The LM2936MP-5.0 from Texas Instruments is a 50mA, 5V fixed-output ultra-low quiescent current low-dropout voltage regulator in a SOT-223 (DCY) surface-mount package. With less than 15uA quiescent current at a 100uA load, the LM2936 is specifically designed for automotive and battery-operated systems where standby power consumption must be minimized. The device features a low-dropout PNP pass element with 200mV typical dropout at 50mA, allowing operation from input voltages as low as 5.5V while maintaining 5V output regulation. The input operating voltage range extends to 40V (60V for the LM2936HV variant), providing adequate margin for automotive load dump transients. The LM2936 retains all features common to LDO regulators including reverse battery protection (-24V continuous, -50V transient), short-circuit current limiting, and thermal shutdown. The +/-3% output voltage tolerance is guaranteed over the full output current, input voltage, and temperature range. The SOT-223 package provides a compact footprint with the exposed tab serving as both the ground connection and the primary thermal path.

The LM2936MP-5.0 uses a PNP pass transistor LDO topology optimized for ultra-low quiescent current. (1) PNP Pass Element: The PNP transistor is connected between the input and output. Unlike NPN-pass regulators that require base drive current proportional to the load current (increasing IQ), the PNP pass element draws minimal base current. The quiescent current remains nearly constant regardless of load, achieving the ultra-low 9uA typical IQ even at 100uA load. (2) Voltage Regulation: An internal bandgap reference generates a stable voltage. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage with the reference and adjusts the PNP base drive to maintain regulation. (3) Reverse Polarity Protection: An internal circuit detects negative input voltages and turns off the pass transistor, preventing reverse current flow and protecting the powered circuitry. (4) Thermal Shutdown: When the junction temperature exceeds approximately 150C, the pass transistor is turned off. After the device cools, regulation resumes. (5) Current Limiting: The output current is limited to approximately 120mA (short-circuit) to protect against fault conditions.
