The ESDA6V1BC6 from STMicroelectronics is a monolithic quad bidirectional Transil ESD protection array that protects up to four signal lines from electrostatic discharge events in a tiny SOT-23-6L package. The bidirectional configuration is specifically designed for symmetrical signals that swing both above and below ground, such as RS-232, audio, and sensor interfaces. The 5V stand-off voltage accommodates 3.3V and 5V logic levels with margin. The low 20 pF line capacitance ensures minimal signal degradation on high-speed data lines. The device complies with IEC 61000-4-2 Level 4 (8 kV contact, 15 kV air discharge) and MIL-STD-883 Method 3015-6 Class 3 (25 kV HBM), providing industrial-grade ESD protection. The BS55 marking identifies the device on assembled PCBs.

The ESDA6V1BC6 uses STMicroelectronics’ Transil (transient voltage suppression) technology, where each protection element is a bidirectional avalanche diode. Under normal operating conditions (voltage within ±5V), the diodes present high impedance (>1 MΩ) and low capacitance (20 pF), appearing transparent to the protected signal. When an ESD event drives the line voltage above the breakdown voltage (6.1V minimum), the avalanche diode conducts, clamping the voltage to a safe level determined by the dynamic resistance (3Ω) and the peak current. For an 8 kV IEC contact discharge, the peak current can reach approximately 20A, resulting in a clamping voltage of about VBR + IPP × Rd = 6.1 + 20 × 3 = 66.1V peak, which is within the tolerance of most IC input structures. The bidirectional design provides identical protection for both positive and negative transients.

The ESDA6V1BC6 is ideal for protecting USB 2.0 data lines (D+/D-) and VBUS from cable discharge events. For RS-232 interfaces, the bidirectional protection handles both the positive and negative voltage swings of the RS-232 signal. In keypad and button interfaces, the device prevents ESD entry through exposed connectors. On VCC power lines, it clamps supply transients that could damage downstream ICs. The 20 pF capacitance is low enough to avoid signal integrity issues on data rates up to approximately 50 Mbps, making it suitable for SPI and I2C bus protection.
