The AM26C31IDR from Texas Instruments is a quadruple differential line driver designed for RS-422 (TIA/EIA-422-B) communication. The device features four independent differential drivers with 3-state outputs, 30Mbps data rate, and +/-10kV HBM ESD protection on bus pins. The differential output voltage of at least +/-2V ensures reliable signal transmission over long cables with noise immunity. The I suffix denotes industrial temperature range, D denotes SOIC-16 package, and R indicates tape and reel packaging.

The AM26C31IDR operates as a quadruple differential line driver for RS-422 communication. (1) Each driver converts a single-ended TTL/CMOS logic input into a differential output pair (Y and Z). When the input is high, Y goes high and Z goes low; when the input is low, Y goes low and Z goes high. The differential voltage of at least +/-2V across the twisted-pair cable provides noise immunity in industrial environments. (2) The 3-state output capability is controlled by the active-high enable pins (G and /G). When the enable is de-asserted, both Y and Z outputs enter a high-impedance state, allowing multiple drivers to share the same bus in multi-drop configurations. (3) The low output skew between complementary outputs (Y-Z) and between different drivers minimizes timing jitter in clock distribution and multi-channel data transmission. The +/-10kV ESD protection on bus pins provides robust protection against electrostatic discharge events common in industrial cabling.
