The AD5721RBRUZ-RL7 is a 12-bit 4-20mA loop-powered DAC from Analog Devices in TSSOP-24 with on-chip voltage reference. It is the 12-bit version of the AD5420 (16-bit), sharing the same architecture and pinout but with lower resolution and lower cost. The on-chip voltage reference is 2.5V +/-5ppm/C drift (the R suffix indicates on-chip reference), eliminating the need for an external reference. The 12-bit DAC core provides 4096 output levels across the 4-20mA range, giving 16mA/4096 = 3.9uA per LSB. The loop-powered architecture draws all operating current from the 4-20mA current loop: at 4mA (zero-scale), the device draws up to 3.9mA for internal operation; at 20mA (full-scale), the loop current provides abundant operating power. The SPI interface supports clock rates up to 50MHz for fast updates. The FAULT output indicates over-temperature, over-voltage, or open-loop conditions. The CLEAR pin asynchronously resets the output to 4mA for safety shutdown. The COMP1/COMP2 pins connect external 0.01uF capacitors for loop stability. The device achieves +/-0.05% FSR integral nonlinearity, corresponding to 8uA accuracy. The HART-compatible output impedance allows FSK digital signals to be superimposed on the 4-20mA loop for FieldComm Group HART protocol communication.
