The AD5621AKSZ-REEL7 from Analog Devices is a 12-bit buffered voltage output NanoDAC in the ultra-compact SC70-6 package. The device features +/-0.5 LSB INL (A grade), 10us settling time, and SPI interface operation up to 30MHz. The 100uA maximum supply current at 3V makes it ideal for battery-powered applications. The output range spans 0V to VREF, where VREF is provided externally from 0.5V to VDD. The power-on reset circuit ensures the DAC output starts at zero scale with brownout detection, preventing undefined output states during power supply transients. The AKSZ suffix denotes A grade INL, SC70-6 package, and REEL7 indicates 7-inch tape and reel.

The AD5621AKSZ-REEL7 operates as a 12-bit voltage output DAC. (1) The DAC architecture uses an R-2R resistor ladder network driven by the 12-bit input register. When a new DAC code is written via SPI, the R-2R ladder switches to the new configuration, and the output buffer amplifier drives the output voltage to the new level within 10us. (2) The SPI interface uses a 16-bit shift register: 2 don’t care bits, 2 control/function bits, and 12 data bits. The control bits select between normal operation and power-down modes (high-Z output or 1kohm/100kohm pull-down). Up to 30MHz SCLK allows very fast DAC updates. (3) The power-on reset (POR) circuit monitors the VDD supply. When VDD drops below the POR threshold, the DAC register is reset to zero scale (0x000), ensuring the output starts at 0V when power is restored. The brownout detection provides additional protection during slow VDD ramps.
