The DS3231MZ+TRL from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a low-cost I2C real-time clock (RTC) with an integrated temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO). The device eliminates the need for an external 32.768 kHz crystal, as both the oscillator and crystal are integrated in the 8-pin SOIC package. The TCXO provides +/-5 ppm accuracy over the full -40C to +85C temperature range and +/-2 ppm at +25C, resulting in less than +/-0.432 seconds per day drift. The device includes two programmable time-of-day alarms, a programmable square wave output at 1 Hz, 1.024 kHz, 4.096 kHz, or 8.192 kHz, and 23 bytes of battery-backed user SRAM. The power-fail circuit automatically switches to battery backup when VCC drops below VBAT.

The DS3231MZ+TRL integrates a 32.768 kHz MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) resonator with a temperature-compensated oscillator circuit on a single die. An on-chip temperature sensor measures the die temperature periodically (once per 64 seconds by default) and the digital compensation engine adjusts the oscillator load capacitance to maintain the target frequency. The temperature compensation polynomial is factory-calibrated for each device, storing compensation coefficients in non-volatile memory. The RTC counter chain divides the 32.768 kHz oscillator output down to 1 Hz and maintains seconds, minutes, hours, day, date, month, and year registers, automatically handling leap years through 2100. The I2C interface (address 0x68) provides read/write access to all time, alarm, and control registers. The power-switching circuit monitors VCC and switches to VBAT when VCC falls below the power-fail threshold (approximately 2.45V), maintaining timekeeping with only 3 uA battery current.
