The DS2482S-100+T&R from Maxim Integrated (now part of Analog Devices) is a single-channel I2C-to-1-Wire bridge that enables any I2C-capable host to communicate with 1-Wire slave devices. The device handles all 1-Wire signaling and timing requirements, including active pull-up for reliable communication with multiple 1-Wire devices on the bus. The active pull-up feature provides a controlled slew-rate pull-up that minimizes ringing on the 1-Wire line while providing sufficient current for fast rise times. The DS2482-100 supports both Standard (16.3kbps) and Overdrive (143kbps) 1-Wire communication speeds. The I2C interface supports up to 400kHz Fast Mode, making it compatible with most microcontroller I2C peripherals. The programmable strong pull-up can supply up to 20mA continuously for EPROM programming or parasite-powered temperature sensors. The internal timers ensure precise 1-Wire timing regardless of host I2C speed, eliminating the need for bit-banging 1-Wire protocols from firmware.

The DS2482S-100+T&R acts as a protocol translator between the I2C bus and the 1-Wire bus. When the host writes to the DS2482’s I2C slave address (0x18, 0x19, or 0x1A depending on pin configuration), the device interprets the command and performs the corresponding 1-Wire operation. The 1-Wire Read/Write command byte specifies whether a 1-Wire reset, 1-Wire write byte, or 1-Wire read byte operation should be performed. For a 1-Wire reset, the DS2482 pulls the 1-Wire line low for 480us (Standard speed) or 48us (Overdrive speed), then releases it and detects the presence pulse from slave devices. For a 1-Wire write operation, the DS2482 generates the appropriate time slots (pull low for 60-120us for write-0, or pull low briefly for write-1). The active pull-up circuit monitors the 1-Wire line voltage during the rising edge and applies a strong pull-up (low impedance to VPUP) when the voltage rises above a threshold, accelerating the RC charging of the 1-Wire bus capacitance. Once the voltage reaches VPUP, the active pull-up reverts to a passive pull-up resistor to avoid overshoot. This controlled approach eliminates the need for a low-value passive pull-up resistor that would waste power and still have slow rise times with large bus capacitance.
