The DP83848IVVX is a single-port 10/100Mbps Ethernet physical layer transceiver from Texas Instruments in the PHYTER family. It provides the complete physical layer function between the MAC layer and the Ethernet cable, supporting IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX. The device offers three configurable MAC interfaces (MII, RMII, SNI) for maximum flexibility in MPU/MCU selection. Auto-MDIX automatically detects and corrects for crossover cables, eliminating wiring errors. Energy Detect mode reduces power consumption when no link partner is present. The 25MHz clock output provides a MAC reference clock without an external oscillator. The I-grade is rated for -40°C to +85°C industrial temperature range.

The DP83848IVVX implements the IEEE 802.3 physical layer (PHY) functions between the MAC and the twisted-pair cable. In 100BASE-TX mode, the transmitter takes 4-bit nibbles from the MII interface, encodes them using 4B/5B coding, scrambles the data, and converts it to MLT-3 signaling for transmission over Category 5 cable. The receiver performs the inverse: MLT-3 equalization, baseline wander compensation, descrambling, 5B/4B decoding, and presents the data as MII nibbles. In 10BASE-T mode, the transmitter uses Manchester encoding and the receiver uses a digital phase-locked loop for clock recovery. Auto-negotiation exchanges capability information with the link partner and selects the highest common mode. Auto-MDIX detects whether a crossover is needed and swaps the transmit and receive pairs internally. The MDIO/MDC management interface allows the MAC to read and write PHY registers for configuration and status monitoring. Energy Detect mode monitors the receive pair for link pulses and powers down the transmitter and most receive circuitry when no link is detected, reducing power to approximately 50mW.
