The CD74HC4051M96 from Texas Instruments is a high-speed CMOS 8-channel analog multiplexer/demultiplexer in a 16-pin SOIC package. It connects one of eight analog inputs (Y0-Y7) to a common output (Z) based on a 3-bit digital address (S0-S2) and an enable input (E). The bidirectional switch architecture supports both multiplexing (8-to-1) and demultiplexing (1-to-8). With 70Ohm typical on-resistance at 5V and 50MHz bandwidth, it handles analog and digital signals. A separate VEE pin enables switching of bipolar analog signals.

The CD74HC4051 uses CMOS transmission gates as analog switches. Each gate consists of parallel N-channel and P-channel MOSFETs that together conduct over the full voltage range from VDD to VEE. The 3-bit address is decoded by an internal 3-to-8 decoder, enabling one of eight switches. When enable (E) is low, the addressed switch closes; when high, all switches open. The bidirectional CMOS transmission gate allows current flow in either direction.
