The BTS4880R from Infineon Technologies is an 8-channel smart high-side power switch in the Classic PROFET 24V family, housed in a PG-DSO-36 package. Each of the eight channels integrates a vertical N-channel power MOSFET with built-in protection and diagnostic functions, capable of delivering up to 1A nominal load current per channel (0.625A with all channels active). The device operates from an 11V to 45V supply and features overcurrent shutdown with auto-restart, overvoltage protection including load dump, thermal shutdown with diagnostic flag, undervoltage lockout, fast demagnetization for inductive loads, and battery reverse polarity protection. The digital diagnostic output reports overtemperature and short circuit conditions. CMOS-compatible inputs simplify microcontroller interfacing.

The BTS4880R integrates 8 independent high-side power switches with protection and diagnostic circuits. (1) Power Stage: Each channel uses an N-channel vertical power MOSFET as the switching element, connected between the supply voltage and the load. Charge pump circuitry provides the gate drive voltage above the supply rail for full enhancement. (2) Protection: Overcurrent shutdown activates when load current exceeds approximately 3A per channel. Thermal shutdown activates when junction temperature exceeds the threshold and provides a diagnostic flag on the status output. Overvoltage protection clamps supply transients including load dump events. Undervoltage lockout prevents incomplete turn-on at low supply voltage. (3) Diagnostics: The open-drain status output reports overtemperature and short circuit conditions, enabling the host controller to identify fault conditions. (4) Fast Demagnetization: When an inductive load is switched off, the integrated clamp circuit provides a low-impedance path for the inductive kick-back current, protecting the MOSFET from avalanche damage.
