The BQ27441DRZR-G1A from Texas Instruments is a single-cell Li-Ion/Li-Polymer battery fuel gauge with Impedance Track technology in a WCSP-12 (1.63×1.63mm) package. The Impedance Track algorithm continuously measures the battery’s impedance and open-circuit voltage to calculate accurate state-of-charge (SOC) and state-of-health (SOH) estimates that compensate for battery aging, temperature, and discharge rate effects. The device measures battery voltage, current (through an external sense resistor), and temperature to model the battery’s electrochemical state in real-time. The I2C interface provides access to SOC, SOH, voltage, current, temperature, remaining capacity, and time-to-empty data. Configurable data flash parameters allow customization of battery profiles, termination voltage, design capacity, and alert thresholds. The device supports automatic battery detection by comparing OCV readings against stored chem ID profiles. Low-power modes (hibernate and sleep) minimize current draw from the battery when the system is inactive. The G1A version includes additional firmware features and improved accuracy over the original BQ27441.

The BQ27441DRZR-G1A uses the Impedance Track algorithm to estimate battery state. (1) Voltage Measurement: A high-precision ADC measures the battery voltage with +/-5mV accuracy. This voltage is used to determine the open-circuit voltage (OCV) during rest periods, which maps to the battery’s state-of-charge through a stored OCV-SOC lookup table. (2) Current Measurement: A coulomb counter ADC measures the voltage across an external sense resistor (typically 10mOhm) with +/-1mA accuracy, tracking charge in and out of the battery. (3) Impedance Tracking: During discharge, the device measures the voltage under load and calculates the battery’s internal impedance using the voltage difference between loaded and OCV values. The impedance changes with temperature, aging, and SOC. By continuously tracking impedance, the algorithm compensates for these effects. (4) SOC Calculation: The SOC is determined by combining the OCV-based SOC (during rest) with the coulomb count-based SOC (during active discharge/charge). The impedance compensation adjusts the remaining capacity prediction for the current discharge rate and temperature. (5) SOH: State-of-health is estimated by comparing the measured full charge capacity to the design capacity, indicating battery degradation over time.
