The B340A-13-F is a metal-semiconductor (Schottky) junction diode. Unlike a PN junction diode, a Schottky diode uses a metal contact on an N-type semiconductor, forming a barrier that conducts with lower forward voltage (0.5V vs 0.7V for silicon). The majority-carrier conduction mechanism eliminates stored charge, enabling fast switching with essentially zero reverse recovery time. This is critical for DC-DC converter freewheeling applications where the diode must transition from conducting to blocking very rapidly. The guard ring around the active area provides a PN junction that protects the Schottky contact from voltage transients and excessive reverse leakage.
