The AVA-183P is a metal oxide varistor (MOV) designed for transient voltage suppression in 115V AC power line and telecommunication applications. The device features a nominal varistor voltage of 183V, maximum continuous AC voltage of 115V, and clamping voltage of 300V at 1A. The bidirectional protection capability suppresses both positive and negative transients. The high energy absorption rating of 2.0J and 100A peak current capability provide robust protection against lightning-induced surges and switching transients.

The AVA-183P operates as a metal oxide varistor (MOV) for transient voltage suppression. (1) The MOV element consists of zinc oxide grains with intergranular boundaries that exhibit nonlinear voltage-current characteristics. Under normal operating voltage below the varistor voltage (183V), the MOV presents very high impedance (leakage current < 10uA), effectively invisible to the circuit. (2) When a transient voltage exceeds the varistor voltage, the intergranular boundaries break down and the MOV impedance drops dramatically, clamping the voltage to approximately 300V at 1A. The MOV absorbs the transient energy and dissipates it as heat. The bidirectional characteristic provides equal protection for both positive and negative transients. (3) After the transient subsides, the MOV returns to its high-impedance state. The energy absorption capability of 2.0J (2ms) determines the maximum transient energy the device can safely absorb. Multiple surges may gradually degrade the MOV, so the device should be selected with adequate margin for the expected surge environment.
