The ATXMEGA128A1U-AU from Microchip Technology is an 8/16-bit AVR XMEGA microcontroller with integrated USB 2.0 full-speed device controller. The device combines 128 KB Flash, 8 KB SRAM, and 2 KB EEPROM with a rich analog peripheral set including a 12-bit 2 MSPS ADC and 12-bit dual-channel DAC. The XMEGA event system allows peripherals to interact without CPU intervention, reducing latency and power consumption. The DMA controller enables CPU-free data transfers between peripherals and memory. Four USART, two SPI, and two TWI interfaces provide flexible connectivity. The USB controller supports full-speed (12 Mbps) device operation with integrated transceiver.

The ATXMEGA128A1U-AU uses the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with most instructions executing in a single clock cycle. The XMEGA architecture extends the classic AVR with an event system that allows peripherals to trigger actions in other peripherals without CPU intervention, reducing response latency. The DMA controller can transfer data between memory and peripherals autonomously. The integrated USB 2.0 full-speed device controller handles USB protocol timing and packet formatting, requiring minimal CPU overhead. The USB controller includes a dedicated FIFO buffer for endpoint data. The 12-bit ADC uses a successive approximation register (SAR) architecture with a pipelined front-end achieving 2 MSPS throughput. The 12-bit DAC uses an R-2R ladder network with rail-to-rail output buffer.
