The ATTINY13A-SU from Microchip (formerly Atmel) is one of the smallest and most cost-effective members of the AVR microcontroller family. With 1KB of Flash program memory, 64 bytes of SRAM, and 64 bytes of EEPROM in an 8-pin SOIC package, it provides just enough resources for simple control tasks that would otherwise require discrete logic or 555 timers. The 10-bit ADC with 4 channels enables basic analog measurement capabilities. The USI (Universal Serial Interface) supports SPI communication for connecting to external peripherals. The internal calibrated RC oscillator provides accurate timing without an external crystal. Operating from 1.8V to 5.5V, the device is suitable for both battery-powered and 5V systems. In-system programming through SPI allows firmware updates in the field.

The ATTINY13A operates around the AVR 8-bit RISC core with a Harvard architecture (separate instruction and data memories). Most instructions execute in a single clock cycle. The 1KB Flash stores the program, 64B SRAM provides working data storage, and 64B EEPROM provides non-volatile data storage. The internal calibrated RC oscillator runs at 9.6MHz or 4.8MHz, with a clock prescaler dividing down to lower frequencies for power savings. The 8-bit Timer/Counter0 provides timing, PWM generation, and interrupt functions. The ADC uses a 10-bit successive approximation architecture with selectable internal 1.1V or VCC reference. The USI implements a simplified SPI interface using 3-wire (clock, data in, data out) communication. Six sleep modes including idle, ADC noise reduction, and power-down minimize power consumption when the CPU is not needed.
