The ATMEGA8A-AU from Microchip Technology is a low-power CMOS 8-bit AVR RISC-based microcontroller featuring 8KB of in-system programmable Flash with read-while-write capabilities, 512B EEPROM, and 1KB SRAM. With 23 general purpose I/O lines, three flexible timer/counters, internal and external interrupts, a serial programmable USART, a byte-oriented TWI interface, 8-channel 10-bit ADC, and an SPI serial port, it provides a highly flexible and cost-effective solution for many embedded control applications.

The ATMEGA8A uses the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 130 instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle. The 32 general-purpose registers are directly connected to the ALU, enabling two independent registers to be accessed in one instruction cycle. The Flash memory is divided into application and boot sections, with the boot section supporting read-while-write operation for self-programming. Five sleep modes (Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, Standby) allow fine-grained power management. The calibrated internal RC oscillator provides a default clock source without external components.
