The ATMEGA64A-AU from Microchip Technology is a high-performance, low-power 8-bit AVR RISC microcontroller featuring 64KB of in-system programmable Flash with read-while-write capability, 2KB EEPROM, and 4KB SRAM. It provides 53 programmable I/O lines, a JTAG interface for on-chip debugging and boundary-scan, 8-channel 10-bit ADC, multiple communication interfaces (USART, SPI, TWI), and flexible timer/counters with compare and PWM modes. The device operates from 2.7V to 5.5V at up to 16MHz.

The ATMEGA64A is based on the AVR enhanced RISC architecture with 131 instructions, most executing in a single clock cycle. The CPU core includes an ALU with 32 general-purpose registers directly connected, enabling two independent registers to be accessed in one instruction cycle. Memory is organized with Harvard architecture separating program Flash and data SRAM. The JTAG interface provides on-chip debug capabilities and Flash programming. Six sleep modes (Idle, ADC Noise Reduction, Power-save, Power-down, Standby, Extended Standby) optimize power consumption for different application scenarios.
