The ATMEGA16U2-AU is a Microchip 8-bit AVR microcontroller with integrated USB 2.0 full-speed device controller. It provides 16 KB Flash, 512 B SRAM, and 512 B EEPROM for firmware and data storage. The USB controller supports 8 configurable endpoints, enabling implementation of various USB device classes (CDC, HID, custom). The AVR core executes up to 16 MIPS at 16 MHz with 32 general-purpose registers. Peripheral interfaces include USART, SPI, and I2C for connecting external devices. The device is widely used as the USB-to-serial bridge in Arduino Uno boards. Packaged in 32-pin TQFP rated for -40C to +85C with 2.7V to 5.5V operation.

The ATMEGA16U2 combines an AVR RISC core with a USB 2.0 full-speed device controller. The AVR core fetches and executes instructions from Flash, accessing data in SRAM and EEPROM. The USB controller handles all USB protocol requirements: SIE (Serial Interface Engine) manages packet formatting, CRC generation/checking, NRZI encoding/decoding, and bit stuffing. Endpoint buffers in SRAM store USB data for IN and OUT transfers. The USB controller generates interrupts on USB events (reset, suspend, SOF, endpoint transfers), allowing firmware to respond. The PLL generates the 48 MHz USB clock from the external 16 MHz crystal. Firmware implements the USB device descriptor and class-specific protocols (e.g., CDC for virtual COM port, HID for keyboard/mouse).

32-pin TQFP with 22 GPIO: Port B (PB0-PB7), Port C (PC2-PC7), Port D (PD0-PD7), plus XTAL1/XTAL2 (16MHz crystal), RESET, VCC/AVCC (3.3-5V), GND, UGND (USB ground), UVCC (USB supply), D+/D- (USB data), UCAP (USB internal reg cap). Refer to datasheet for complete 32-pin mapping.
