The XTR305IRGWR from Texas Instruments is a complete 4-20mA analog output transmitter with integrated HART modem interface in a TSSOP-20 package. The device combines a precision 16-bit DAC, voltage-to-current converter, and HART FSK signal coupling circuitry into a single IC, replacing multiple discrete components in traditional 4-20mA output designs. In current mode, the output is programmable over 0-24mA with +/-0.05% typical accuracy, covering the standard 4-20mA loop range with margin for alarm conditions (0mA for open loop, >20mA for high alarm). In voltage mode, the output ranges from 0V to 25V for voltage-mode actuators. The integrated HART FSK coupling allows HART digital communication signals to be superimposed on the 4-20mA analog output, enabling simultaneous analog control and digital communication on a single pair of wires. Built-in diagnostics detect open loop conditions, output driver faults, and overtemperature situations, reporting these to the host via SPI. An internal EEPROM stores calibration coefficients and configuration data, enabling self-contained calibration without external processor intervention.

The XTR305IRGWR integrates a complete 4-20mA output signal chain. (1) 16-bit DAC: The integrated 16-bit DAC converts the digital code from the SPI interface to an analog voltage. The DAC output is buffered and fed to the voltage-to-current converter. (2) V/I Converter: The voltage-to-current converter transforms the DAC output voltage into a proportional output current. The output current is sensed through a precision internal shunt resistor, and a feedback loop maintains accurate current regulation. The output driver is a PNP transistor that sources current from the loop supply to the load. (3) HART Interface: The HART FSK (Frequency Shift Keying) signal is AC-coupled from an external HART modem into the XTR305. The FSK signal modulates the output current at approximately +/-0.5mA peak, superimposing the digital HART communication on the 4-20mA analog signal without affecting the average DC level. (4) Diagnostics: The device monitors output current, loop voltage, and die temperature. If the output current is outside the expected range (open loop or short circuit), or if the die temperature exceeds the limit, a fault flag is set and can be read via SPI.
