The XTR115UA/2K5 from Texas Instruments is a precision 4-20mA current loop transmitter designed for industrial sensor signal conditioning. The device integrates a 5V regulator for powering external sensor circuitry and a precision 2.5V reference for DAC or ADC excitation. The 200uA quiescent current preserves loop dynamic range, allowing the sensor circuitry to consume up to 3.8mA within the 4mA live-zero. The +/-0.003% nonlinearity and +/-0.05% span error provide high-accuracy current transmission. The output current is limited to 25mA for fault protection. The UA/2K5 suffix denotes SOIC-8 package with 2500-unit tape and reel.

The XTR115UA/2K5 operates as a precision 4-20mA current loop transmitter. (1) The device converts a voltage input at the IIN pin to a proportional current output on the loop. The internal amplifier and output transistor regulate the loop current so that IOUT = (IIN x 100) + IQ, where IIN is the input current and IQ is the quiescent current (200uA typical). An external resistor sets the input voltage-to-current conversion ratio. The 4mA live-zero is established by the quiescent current, and the 20mA full-scale is reached when the input contributes 16mA. (2) The on-chip 5V regulator (VREG pin) provides up to 3.6mA for powering external circuitry such as op-amps, ADCs, and sensor excitation. The precision 2.5V reference (VREF pin) is used for DAC reference or sensor bridge excitation. Both VREG and VREF are derived from the loop supply, eliminating external regulators. (3) The 25mA output current limit protects against output short circuits and excessive loop current. The 7.5V minimum loop supply voltage ensures the internal circuitry operates correctly while maintaining the loop current. The two-wire configuration powers the transmitter from the loop current itself, requiring no separate power supply.
