The STMicroelectronics VN5R003H-E is a specialized reverse battery protection device built using VIPower technology, designed to protect automotive electronic modules from damage caused by reverse battery connection. Unlike conventional Schottky diode solutions that dissipate significant power (typically 0.3-0.5 V drop), the VN5R003H-E uses an N-channel MOSFET with a control circuit to achieve an ultra-low on-state resistance of just 3 mΩ. At a typical automotive current of 10 A, this results in only 30 mV of voltage drop and 0.3 W of power dissipation, compared to 5 W with a diode solution. The device automatically turns on when the battery polarity is correct (IN voltage negative relative to Drain) and turns off when reverse polarity is detected, protecting downstream electronics.

The VN5R003H-E operates as an intelligent reverse polarity protection switch. The device has three terminals: Drain (connected to battery), Source (connected to the protected module), and IN (control). When battery polarity is correct, the IN pin voltage is negative relative to the Drain, which causes the internal driver to turn on the N-channel MOSFET, connecting the battery to the module through the ultra-low 3 mΩ channel. If the battery is connected in reverse, the Drain voltage becomes negative relative to IN, and the device automatically turns off, blocking reverse current flow. When IN is left open (floating), the device enters an OFF state and behaves like a power diode between Source and Drain, providing passive protection. The internal ESD protection and electromagnetic optimization ensure reliable operation in the harsh automotive electrical environment.
