The UCC28600D is a Texas Instruments 8-pin quasi-resonant flyback green-mode controller designed for high-efficiency AC-DC power conversion in adapters, chargers, and LED drivers. The quasi-resonant (QR) valley-switching technique reduces switching losses by turning on the primary MOSFET at the valley of the drain voltage ringing, enabling higher efficiency at full load compared to traditional hard-switched flyback. At light loads, the green-mode burst operation reduces the effective switching frequency to maintain efficiency and meet standby power requirements. The controller operates at 40kHz to 130kHz with up to 99% duty cycle for wide input range applications. Comprehensive protection features include overvoltage (OVP), overcurrent (OCP), and undervoltage lockout (UVLO). Packaged in SOIC-8 rated for -40C to +105C.

The UCC28600 operates in quasi-resonant mode where the primary MOSFET turn-on is synchronized to the valley of the drain-source voltage ringing that occurs after the secondary diode stops conducting. A valley-detection circuit monitors the FB pin to identify the optimal turn-on instant, minimizing turn-on switching losses. The switching frequency varies inversely with load: at full load the frequency is highest (up to 130kHz), and as load decreases the frequency reduces toward 40kHz. Below a light-load threshold, the controller enters green-mode burst operation where switching is periodically enabled and disabled to regulate the output while minimizing average switching losses. The feedback (FB) pin sets the output voltage regulation point via an optocoupler, and the CS pin provides cycle-by-cycle peak current limiting.
