The UC3846DWTR from Texas Instruments is a dual-output current-mode PWM controller in SOIC-16 package. The device provides all features needed for fixed-frequency current-mode control with minimum external component count. The differential current sense amplifier with wide common mode range enables flexible current sensing topologies. The 500mA peak totem-pole outputs directly drive power MOSFET gates. Key features include automatic feedforward compensation, programmable pulse-by-pulse current limiting, automatic symmetry correction for push-pull converters, and double-pulse suppression. The shutdown terminal can initiate either a complete shutdown with automatic restart or latch the supply off. The DWTR suffix denotes SOIC-16 package with tape and reel packaging.

The UC3846DWTR operates as a fixed-frequency current-mode PWM controller. (1) The oscillator generates a sawtooth waveform at the frequency set by external RT and CT components (up to 500kHz). For each oscillator cycle, the PWM latch is set by the oscillator and reset by the current sense comparator, creating a duty cycle proportional to the error voltage divided by the current sense signal. This current-mode control provides inherent pulse-by-pulse current limiting and improved line regulation compared to voltage-mode control. (2) The differential current sense amplifier measures the switch current through a sense resistor or current transformer. The amplifier has wide common mode range, allowing the sense resistor to be placed in various locations (source side, return path, or transformer secondary). The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage to the 5.1V reference and generates the control voltage for the PWM comparator. (3) For push-pull and bridge topologies, the two outputs alternate with a guaranteed dead time to prevent cross-conduction. The 50% maximum duty cycle per output ensures transformer core reset in push-pull configurations. The automatic symmetry correction balances the volt-second product across the transformer primary, preventing core saturation even with asymmetrical loads.
