The Thinking Electronic TVR20821KSY is a 20mm diameter metal oxide varistor (MOV) with 820V maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV). The TVR series uses zinc oxide (ZnO) ceramic technology with a polycrystalline microstructure of conductive grains separated by insulating grain boundaries. Under normal operating voltage, the grain boundaries are insulating and the MOV draws only microamps of leakage current. When a transient voltage exceeds the varistor voltage, the grain boundaries undergo avalanche breakdown, becoming highly conductive and clamping the voltage. The 20mm disc provides substantial energy absorption for industrial power supply protection, motor drive transient suppression, and lightning surge protection in 690VAC three-phase power systems.

The MOV is fabricated from zinc oxide (ZnO) ceramic with a polycrystalline microstructure of conductive ZnO grains separated by insulating grain boundaries. At normal operating voltage, the grain boundaries are insulating and the MOV draws only microamps of leakage current. When a transient voltage exceeds the varistor voltage, the grain boundaries undergo avalanche breakdown, becoming highly conductive and clamping the voltage across the MOV. The energy of the transient is absorbed as heat in the ceramic body. After the transient, the MOV returns to its high-impedance state.
